Giggs: Signing Van Persie Means We Are Determined To Win Trophies This Season

photoManchester United's signing of Robin van Persie from Arsenal has sent out a "big message" that the club is determined to win trophies this season, Ryan Giggs has said.

Van Persie moved to Old Trafford from the Emirates in a deal thought to be worth around £24 million after a summer of speculation had seen him linked with United, champions Manchester City and Juventus.

And veteran Giggs said United were ready to put the disappointment of losing last season's title on goal difference - and finishing the season empty-handed - behind them.

"It [the van Persie signing] sends out a big message," Giggs told United's official website. "It's great when a player comes out and says he wants to come to the club as well.

"I'm biased, but players should want to come to United because you're always guaranteed to be up there challenging for trophies, there's a great team spirit, top facilities, and you get to play for a great manager. There are so many plus points."

The 38-year-old said United were keen to respond to their opening-day defeat at Everton, where Marouane Fellaini scored a thoroughly-deserved winner for the hosts, by beating Fulham at Old Trafford this weekend.

"I'm more excited than ever about the season,'' he added. "You appreciate and try to enjoy things a lot more as your career comes towards the end, and I'm no different. I can't wait for it all to unfold.

"It wasn't a nice feeling to lose the title last season - it never is, but it was the manner in which we lost it which was tough to take. I'm sure if we put that much effort in again, and get that little bit of luck, then we'll go that extra step."
